Challenge Getaway XP Pro HTLR 40 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

The Getaway XP is a new addition to Challenge's gravel bike tire lineup, and it complements the "regular" Getaway (read our review) that we tested last year. The XP part stands for Xtra Protection, and it exists because there is a growing demand for more robust gravel bike tires that offer more protection, better durability, and are better able to keep the air in when used tubeless.

Compared to the regular Challenge Getaway Pro HTLR, the most significant change is the use of the new CORAZZAARMOR layers that replace the PPS2 anti-puncture layer that Challenge uses on most of their other tires. The Getaway XP now combines 2 layers of CORAZZAARMOR with a CORAZZAARMOR Gold layer that runs from bead to bead and an additional CORAZZAARMOR Silver layer on the sidewalls for extra sidewall protection and better sealing capabilities.

When we look back at the regular Getaway Pro HTLR with the PPS2 anti-puncture layer, the new XP construction is quite a significant change as the PPS2 layer only covered the tread part of the tire. The new XP construction offers much stronger sidewalls as they come with additional layers of anti-puncture material. The tread part seems less protected, as our test results indicate the PPS2 layer was stronger than the new single layer of CORAZZAARMOR gold.

For tubeless tires that are used with sealant, stronger sidewalls at the expense of slightly less tread puncture resistance is a good tradeoff; the tread is much thicker and more flexible, which means punctures are much easier to seal when compared to punctures in the sidewalls.

We've tested the 40-622 version of the Getaway XP, and we'll compare it to the regular Getaway 40-622, the Challenge Strada Bianca Pro HTLR 40-622, and a range of similar tires from other manufacturers.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

When we compare the Challenge Getaway XP Pro HTLR to the regular Getaway Pro HTLR, the XP trades performance (rolling resistance, weight) for increased sidewall protection. Surprisingly, the XP offers less tread puncture resistance, which isn't a huge problem, but it's good to know the extra protection doesn't cover the entire tire.

Like the regular Getaway (read our review), the weakest link of the Getaway XP can be found in our hard surface wet grip test, where the Getaway performs near the bottom of the chart for both the center and the edge grip. We can see some use cases for this tire, but it could be better when it comes to the more demanding conditions.
