Schwalbe G-One RS Pro (black) 55 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

Gravel bike tires keep getting bigger and bigger, and it's no surprise Schwalbe launched a 55 mm version of their popular G-One RS Pro gravel bike tire. Even though this is a gravel bike tire, we've moved it to the MTB section so we can compare the G-One RS Pro to mountain bike tires that are similar in size.

We've already tested the Schwalbe G-One RS Pro in the 40 (read our review), 45 (read our review), and 50 mm (read our review) sizes, and its performance is well documented on this website. From a specifications standpoint, we find no differences between the 50 and 55 mm versions as they all use Schwalbe's 67 TPI tubeless-ready casing with a V-Guard anti-puncture belt and their Addix Race compound on top.

Schwalbe does something funny with the sidewall colors, as the 55-622 size is only available with black sidewalls, while the 50-622 size is only available with transparent (brown) sidewalls. You'll be lucky if the size you want is available in the color you want.

As we're comparing the 55 mm G-One RS Pro to MTB tires, the most interesting tire to us is Schwalbe's Thunder Burt (read our review), available in the 29x2.10 size and somewhat similar to the G-One RS, with small center knobs and larger edge knobs. We've also thrown in some other Schwalbe MTB tires into the comparison, and also some tires from competing manufacturers.

The MTB section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

When we compare the 55 mm G-One RS Pro to mountain bike tires in roughly the same size, we see that the G-One RS doesn't impress with low rolling resistance. The higher rolling resistance is mainly due to the V-Guard anti-puncture belt under the tread, which is common on gravel bike tires but not on mountain bike tires.

When we compare the Schwalbe G-One RS Pro to the Schwalbe Thunder Burt (read our review), which is available in the 54 mm / 2.10 size, we see that the Thunder Burt will be the faster tire. We also see many other mountain bike tires that roll faster and weigh less than the G-One RS Pro.

When we only compare the G-One RS Pro to mountain bike tires that also feature an anti-puncture belt under the tread (and are available), the landscape changes, and the G-One RS Pro in the 55 mm size does come out on top. The anti-puncture belt is an important feature of gravel bike tires, as gravel is much more likely to cut through the tread than most other off-road conditions.

Comparing the 40, 45, 50, and 55 mm G-One RS through Pro View shows us that the 55 mm size is substantially slower than the smaller sizes. We also see a significant jump in the specified and measured weights, with our 55 mm G-One RS Pro sample well over 700 grams. The center grip in our hard-surface wet grip test also seems to be off, but it might be influenced by the slightly higher center knobs, which reduce the contact patch on hard surfaces.

We've now tested quite a lot of off-road tires in different sizes, and the trend we're seeing is that the larger sizes roll slower than the smaller ones, which is the opposite of what we've seen with slick road bike tires.
