Continental Grand Prix 5000 All Season TR (cream) 35 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

The All Season (AS) TR version of the Grand Prix 5000 has been available for some time with black sidewalls, but with the current trend of colored sidewalls, Continental couldn't fall behind. For the GP5000 All Season TR, Continental has opted to offer the tire with their light "cream" sidewalls rather than the more brown "tan" sidewalls seen on some other Continental tires.

We have already tested the "standard" version of the All Season TR with black sidewalls in all sizes (25, 28, 32, 35). Therefore, we already know how the tire performs, and in this article, we will focus primarily on the differences between the black and cream sidewall versions.

On paper, there are no differences in tire construction, but we notice that the cream sidewall versions are 10 to 15 grams heavier than the full black versions. Continental has to add extra material to achieve this sidewall color, and we are very curious about how this affects performance.

The cream sidewalls are available in all sizes of the Grand Prix 5000 All Season TR (25, 28, 32, 35). Below you will find our test results, a comparison with the 35 mm version with black sidewalls, and a selection of comparable tires from other manufacturers.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Interestingly, the cream sidewall version of the Grand Prix 5000 All Season TR rolls faster than the black sidewall version we tested earlier. We also see that the cream sidewalls are even stronger than the black sidewalls, suggesting that extra material has been added here. Our sample of the cream version has a slightly thinner tread, which could influence the results in these tests.

We also find that the wet grip of this sample is slightly lower than the version with black sidewalls that we tested two years ago. The differences are small, and the variations may be due to manufacturing tolerances and the margin of error in our tests.

The only conclusion we can confidently draw is that the cream sidewalls are stronger than the black sidewalls. However, the black sidewalls were already stronger than those of the average tubeless-ready tire, so we consider this a secondary advantage.
