Continental Terra Adventure 45 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

The Terra Adventure is a new tire from Continental and is the first tire we've tested that comes with Continental's new Trail casing and Grip compound. We consider this test a preview of the future off-road tires from Continental, as we already see this construction applied to more new tires.

The Terra Adventure is a versatile tire for gravel biking; you won't be surprised if you find yourself on an adventure off the beaten path. Its fairly coarse tread pattern should perform well on asphalt, loose conditions, and everything in between. The Grip compound and Trail casing assist in ensuring that you won't be caught off guard by a lack of grip or a flat tire.

The Trail casing of the Terra Adventure features an anti-puncture layer under the tread, which we don't see on most gravel bike tires. This further indicates that the Terra Adventure is not a pure performance tire but one that won't surprise you easily.

The Terra Adventure is available in 45, 50, and 55 mm sizes, which is a good choice for this type of tire. The 55 mm version also makes the tire interesting for mountain bikes, although we know that many similar tire options are available in the 55-622 / 29x2.1 size. We tested the Terra Adventure in the 45 mm size and will compare it with 40, 45, and 50 mm wide gravel bike tires.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

The Terra Adventure gives us a first look at Continental's new Trail casing and Grip compound. We immediately notice that this combination does not result in low rolling resistance, as the rolling resistance is significantly higher than that of the tires we are comparing it to. However, we see strong performance in the tread puncture resistance, and the new Grip compound performs well in our wet grip tests.

We also find it interesting that the Terra Adventure is not "made in Germany" but comes from a different factory in China. We are curious whether this will apply to the entire new Trail/Race/Grip/Rapid series from Continental or if the Terra Adventure is an exception and deviates from Continental's top-of-the-range tires.

If the Terra Adventure's features suit your needs, we certainly recommend it. It has many strong points as long as you don't need a fast rolling tire.
