Specialized revamped its gravel tire lineup back in 2025, and the new Pathfinder TLR quickly gathered enough Pro Member votes to hit our test lab shortly after its original release. Following the recent trend towards larger gravel bike tires, Specialized just updated the Pathfinder TLR range with the high-volume 50 mm and 29x2.2 sizes. We have now put the Pathfinder TLR 50 mm through our tests, and we've found some surprising differences that point to an updated compound.
Having previously tested the 40 mm and 45 mm versions of the new Pathfinder TLR, we already have a solid understanding of how the updated casing and Gripton compound perform. However, wider versions often—though not always—bring structural differences, such as scaled tread thickness, taller side knobs, or modified casing construction, that can alter rolling resistance and puncture protection compared to their narrower siblings.

In this review, we're going to compare the 50 mm Pathfinder TLR directly against the 40 mm and 45 mm versions of the Pathfinder TLR, the 47 mm Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready (tested in 2024), and a selection of popular 48–50 mm semi-slick gravel tires with similar specifications.

The 50 mm Pathfinder TLR rolls surprisingly fast, and it's now the fastest Pathfinder we've tested to date. When we compare the 50 mm Pathfinder to the 45 mm Pathfinder that already rolled faster than all other Pathfinders, we see rolling resistance comes in another 15% lower, which is more than we usually see with a simple size change. We believe the new (at least the 50 mm) Pathfinders come with an updated or retuned compound (more Gripton T2, less Gripton T5), as that's the only way it can roll this much faster.
When we factor in the results from our wet grip tests, we're even more certain the compound has changed. We usually see that larger sizes of the same tire offer more grip in this test, but the 50 mm Pathfinder scores just 73 points in the wet grip center test, while the 40 and 45 sizes score 84 and 83 points, respectively. A faster-rolling compound usually offers less wet grip, and that's exactly what we see with the new 50 mm Pathfinder.
We find the 50 mm Pathfinder TLR a more balanced semi-slick tire, and that's why we rate it higher than both the 40 and 45 mm sizes. We're wondering whether the latest production batches of the 40 and 45 mm Pathfinder also roll faster, but we can only know that by retesting them. For now, the safest path to a fast Pathfinder is the high-volume 50 mm size.
