Tufo Gravel Speedero 36 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

Together with the Gravel Thundero (read our review) and Gravel Swampero (read our review), the Tufo Gravel Speedero has been the surprise tire of the past few years. Because these tires have become popular quite quickly, there is a vast interest in sizes other than the standard 40 mm size we often test. This time, we will look at the 36 mm version of the Speedero and see if we can find any surprises.

If you go by name alone, the Speedero should be the fastest tire in Tufo's gravel lineup. However, our tests of the 40mm versions of both the Speedero and Thundero show that there is actually no difference in speed between them. In our opinion, the Gravel Thundero has a more versatile tread pattern, and would be the better tire in most cases unless you ride a lot on asphalt.

Like almost all tires in the Tufo Gravel range, the Speedero is available in the 36, 40, and 44mm sizes, with all sizes available in black or beige sidewalls for a more classic look. There are no obvious differences between the different sizes except for the obvious lower weight of the smaller sizes.

Let's jump over to the results of the 36mm version and compare it to the 40mm version of the Speedero, 40mm Thundero, 40mm Swampero, and a wide selection of other tires with similar characteristics.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

The 36 mm Tufo Gravel Speedero performs almost the same as the 40 mm version (read our review) we tested almost 2 years ago. The 36mm size rolls slightly slower, is obviously a bit lighter, and scores slightly higher in the sidewall puncture test. However, all of these differences are marginal and can easily be attributed to the margin of error in the tests and manufacturing.

If you're looking for a fast gravel bike tire and ride a lot on asphalt, the 36mm Gravel Speedero quickly shows up as one of the best choices in our CX-Gravel overview. However, don't forget the Gravel Thundero, which has a more versatile tread pattern that will perform slightly better in most gravel bike scenarios.
