Hutchinson Caracal Allroad (tan) 35 road bike tire on a rolling resistance test machine

Since we tested the Hutchinson Caracal Race, it has quickly become one of the most popular choices on our site for those looking for a fast semi-slick gravel bike tire. The Caracal Race is only available in the 40 and 45 mm sizes, which aligns with the trend towards larger gravel bike tires. If you still like smaller tires, Hutchinson recently introduced the Caracal Allroad, which is only available in the 35 mm size.

The Caracal Allroad's construction is very similar to the Caracal Race (read our review) as both use a 127 TPI casing and Hutchinson's Mach Tread 3.0 compound, which we know are both good choices. There is a significant difference, though, and it can be found under the tread: the Caracal Allroad comes with an extra anti-puncture strip under the tread that boosts tread puncture resistance by 30 to 35%.

The extra anti-puncture strip makes the Caracal Allroad a different tire than the Caracal Race, and combined with the smaller 35 mm size, this is a good tire for very light off-road use.

There is no choice in tire size with the Caracal Allroad, but you can choose between tan or black sidewalls. We've tested the 35 mm Caracal Allroad with tan sidewalls and will compare it to the Caracal Race in the 40 mm size, and a selection of similar tires in the 35-38 mm range.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width.

All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs.

Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Even though both the Caracal Allroad and Caracal Race (read our review) use the same 127 TPI casing and Mach Tread 3.0 compound, the anti-puncture strip makes them completely different tires. The puncture strip under the tread of the Caracal Allroad adds roughly 30 to 35% to the tread puncture resistance, but you also pay a penalty in rolling resistance that's increased by approximately 30 to 35% as well.

Although it's only a slight difference, we also see the edge knobs have less height than the Caracal Race, which further reduces the off-road performance. The center hard-surface wet grip is about as good as it gets, but we see the edge hard-surface grip coming in much lower, as the knobby tread along the edge of the tire reduces the contact patch. We see this on all semi-slick tires, and it's simply a trade-off between on- and off-road performance.

When we compare all 35 mm tires we've tested to date, we see the Caracal Allroad comes out on top when you're looking for a semi-slick tire that offers more than 45 points in our tread puncture test and over 70 points in our hard-surface wet grip test.

We can see the Caracal Allroad working well if this tire ticks your boxes, but it will be hard to resist the speed of the Caracal Race when you can fit the 40 mm size.
