- Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR (tanwall) 28
(100% is best)

We have tested many different versions of the Continental Grand Prix 5000, but our test of the transparent 25mm version of the S TR was one of the most remarkable. Our test results showed that the 25mm transparent (tan wall) version has a 15% higher rolling resistance than the same size with black sidewalls. We have now repeated this test with the 28mm versions to see if we come to the same conclusion.
As we have tested so many versions of the Grand Prix 5000, we recommend that you read one of the many other articles on our website if you want to know more about the Grand Prix 5000 in all its colors and variations. Type "5000" in the search bar on our website, and you will get a wealth of information.
So, we have tested the 28mm version of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR with transparent sidewalls and will compare it with the 28mm version with black sidewalls and, of course, a selection of similar tires from Continental and competing brands.

The Road Bike section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load. |

Conclusion
- Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR (tanwall) 28
(100% is best)
We see the same thing as with the 25mm versions: the 28mm transparent version of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR rolls significantly slower than the version with black sidewalls. Our 28mm transparent sample is also considerably heavier than our 28mm black sidewall sample, resulting in a rolling resistance that increases by more than 20% at the lowest tire pressures.
We can now conclude that the transparent sidewalls cause this poorer result. We think there is more loss in the casing wires of the transparent version because they are less fixated and can rub against each other, resulting in a loss of efficiency.
In all our other tests, we do not see any differences, and the 28mm transparent version performs in line with all the other versions of the Grand Prix 5000 S TR we have tested.
We seem to have forgotten why tire manufacturers started making tire sidewalls black. If you want the best version of the Grand Prix 5000, go for the black sidewalls.
