CX/Gravel Tire Test: Schwalbe G-One RS Super Race 45

The Schwalbe G-One RS Super Race with Addix Race compound is Schwalbe's fastest gravel bike tire. We already tested both the 35 (read our review) and 40 mm (read our review) versions of the G-One RS and found them to be one of the quickest gravel bike tires that still offer a somewhat knobby tread. This review will look at the 45 mm version of the G-One RS and compare it to the 35 and 40 mm versions.

All sizes of the G-One RS (35, 40, 45) come with the same 67 TPI Super Race casing and Addix Race compound, which means the overall performance in our tests should come in very close to each other. However, after testing a few other tires where only the size was different, we have seen that there can sometimes be subtle differences in the thickness of the tread or the height of the knobs. We are excited to see how these differences, if any, will affect the performance of the 45 mm version in our tests.

The CX/Gravel section is a multi tire size section, air pressures have been adjusted to the measured casing width. All numbers are for a single tire at a speed of 29 km/h / 18 mph and a load of 42.5 kg / 94 lbs. Use the formula: RR (Watts) = CRR * speed (m/s) * load (N) to calculate rolling resistance at a given speed and load.

Conclusion

As we expected, the 45 mm version of the Schwalbe G-One RS performs similarly to the 35 and 40 mm versions that we previously tested. However, we noticed a significant increase in rolling resistance, approximately 10 percent higher than the other versions. Although we observed an increase in rolling resistance when we moved from the 35 to 40 mm version, the 45 mm size has a higher impact on rolling resistance.

It's challenging to attribute all the increased rolling resistance to the tire's larger size, as many factors can influence rolling resistance. To obtain more accurate results on how size affects the rolling resistance of gravel bike tires, we would need three samples produced consecutively. Manufacturing tolerances can skew the results, so having consecutive samples will be the only way to provide an apples-to-apples comparison.

If you frequently ride on hard and smooth surfaces, the smaller versions of the G-One RS are your best bet. However, the bigger sizes may be more suitable if you ride primarily on softer and less smooth surfaces. Ultimately, choosing the right size depends on your personal requirements and the type of surface you ride on the most.
